Special Alpha unit of Belarus KGB turns 30

Countering terrorism, drug trafficking, arms trafficking and organized crime are the task of counterterrorist unit "Alpha" or group "A" of the KGB of Belarus, which  is celebrating its 30th anniversary today. 

The detachment was founded  on March 3, 1990. By order of the KGB leadership, a group № 11 was created in Minsk. The new unit was designed to localize and prevent terrorist and extremist actions and other particularly dangerous manifestations in the Belarusian SSR and the Baltic republics. After 2 years, a special unit joined the KGB of Belarus and received its official name - Group A or Alfa. Among the main tasks of the unit are the detention of persons suspected of committing such crimes as espionage, hostage-taking, drug trafficking, smuggling, arms trafficking. Alfa fighters confirm their training by winning various national and international competitions and are rightly considered one of the strongest units in the post-Soviet space.
