Lithuania considers cluster munitions effective combat tool

4 июля 2024

The Lithuanian government has approved withdrawal from the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions. The treaty bans the use, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions because of the risks that unexploded shells pose to civilians.

Lithuania acceded to it in 2011. However, now the Defense Ministry of the Baltic republic has changed its position. The ministry now considers cluster munitions an effective means of combat that the Lithuanian army should use because, it is argued, a likely adversary would surely do so.
