UK faces huge systemic problems in 2024 - Politico

The UK will face huge systemic problems this year, few of which have been solved in the five weeks of the election campaign, BELTA writes, citing Politico,

"The UK economy has been on the brink of life support for years, faltering with little or negative growth. At the same time, the interest payments on the national debt have soared by tens of billions of pounds, overwhelming any real investment in neglected and crumbling public services. The government's tax collections have already reached near-record levels," the piece says.

The publication points to the sharply increased cost of living for the population, which was facilitated by exorbitant prices for energy and commodities caused by the conflict in Ukraine.

Problems are also observed in the health sector, where "catastrophic shortage of staff and funding", and waiting lists for treatment and care are record-breaking.

"In 2024, the UK will face a housing crisis, a prison crisis and a university funding crisis. Mental health and special needs services are on the brink of collapse," notes Politico.

The publication emphasizes that neither the Conservatives nor Labor have sought to address these problems in any meaningful way in their election manifestos, and public documents.
