Two centuries of Switzerland's neutral status were cancelled in two days because we decided to apply sanctions against Russia. This was stated by Guy Mettan, a political activist, journalist and writer from Switzerland.

Commenting on the statement that some experts say that Switzerland has ceased to be neutral in the conflict with Ukraine, the politician said that from his position as a Swiss citizen, it was a scandalous decision to end Switzerland's neutrality. "Two centuries of neutral status was abolished in two days because we decided to apply sanctions against Russia, sanctions that are illegal in terms of international law. To me it's a twofold problem, this kind of sanctions and the loss of neutrality," he said. - But now we have a popular initiative, collecting signatures to hold a referendum on the neutrality of Switzerland and its strengthening. So I think it's too early to put a period on Swiss neutrality, we will resolve this issue in the coming years."

Guy Mettan added that if we look at the sanctions on a geopolitical level, they do not work, after all, the countries continue to exist.

Guy Mettan, journalist, writer (Switzerland):

“Take Cuba or Iran or sanctions against Belarus, those countries continue to exist. I think from a geopolitical point of view these are ineffective, they can harm countries, they can create difficulties in the economy, but they can strengthen the will of people to resist, they can rally people to this insulting unfair treatment to them. In my opinion, using sanctions to geopolitics is a bad idea.”
