Heads of CIS intelligence agencies discuss security issues in Minsk

4 июня 2023

Security in our common home, the Commonwealth of Independent States, was one of the main topics of the week. Heads of CIS special services gathered in Minsk. Despite the fact that not all representatives of the organization, including at the highest level, are properly active (and there are 11 countries in the Commonwealth and de jure Ukraine still remains a member of the CIS), cooperation in the field of special services has been and remains very tight.

At the round table in the Palace of Independence we did not see, for example, representatives of Ukraine and Moldova. The latter, apparently, takes its cue from its neighbor by withdrawing from part of the agreements and treaties. The country's officials say that Kishinev is ready to speed up its exit from the CIS as soon as the European Union demands it. However, we all remember what happens when you slam the door loudly. The example of Georgia is most eloquent.

Describing the situation in the CIS, Alexander Lukashenko said that the security situation is becoming more and more heated. Of course, the Ukrainian issue is not the only one. Intelligence services, including through partner channels, receive information about real plans of terrorist acts in Belarus by members of militant groups. And Western handlers promise fugitives hundreds of millions of dollars for services of subversive activities on the territory of our country.

The tense situation along the perimeter and within our Commonwealth obliges us to have such a serious conversation. New threats related to the military-political situation have been added. Plus information and psychological attacks: fakes and innuendoes. But the traditional threats have not gone away either - terrorism, drug trafficking. Any danger for one of the CIS countries automatically becomes a threat to other CIS members.

It would seem that especially at a time like this we must unite, but not all members choose this path. According to the reports, made at the meeting, it became clear: this is a Western strategy - their own should play against their own. As the director of the Russian FSB said, Moldova is being pushed to participate in the Ukrainian conflict, inciting it to the forceful cleansing of Transnistria and Gagauzia. And the West and the U.S. are not abandoning the old plan. It's already a classic to blame Russia and Belarus for all the troubles of Ukraine.

One of the first words of our President at the meeting with the heads of the special services was a very targeted message to those who haven't yet fully assessed the situation.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:

“After the start of the special military operation in Ukraine and the imposition of large-scale sanctions against Belarus and Russia, some people in our countries hesitated, twisted, faltered, and so on. It's probably natural. Very turbulent events occurred instantly, so it takes some time to assess the situation.”
